Policy Drivers

Furniturefootprinter™ has been developed in conjunction with Best Foot Forward (BFF). It draws on BFF's ten years of experience in measuring ecological and carbon footprints and its extensive relationships with those individuals and organisations who drive and set policy.

It is now widely acknowledged that greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced dramatically to avoid climate chaos. Business, whether delivering products or services, has a central role to play in this. The influential Stern report published in 2006 called for a 60-80% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050 and the UK government is now committed, in the Climate Change Bill, to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 60% from 1990 levels, by 2050. The EU is similarly committed to cutting emissions by at least 20% by 2020

While 'cap and trade' regulation currently applies to just a few key energy intensive sectors, to achieve such challenging targets all sectors of the economy will need to play their part. The Climate Change Bill introduces the Carbon Reduction Commitment which will bring many more UK businesses in previously unaffected sectors into the 'cap and trade' regime, requiring them to calculate and report their emissions.

'Carbon literate' consumers are calling for the supply of low carbon goods and services and climate responsibility will become central to brand identity. In response the Carbon Trust, DEFRA and BSI are working on a Publicly Available Specification (PAS 2050) for calculating the carbon footprints of products and services

Any business looking to flourish in the 21st century understands that its climate impact is key. Understanding the carbon footprint of your business is an essential first step in managing risks and capitalising on opportunities.

Standards

Best Foot Forward lends essential credibility to furniturefootprinter™ being at the forefront of standards development and application both for carbon and ecological footprinting.

Standards for methodologies and applications are crucial when measuring and monitoring footprints. BFF drafted the first European ecological footprint standard which is now part of the international standard hosted by the Global Footprint Network.

BFF continues to work with all those involved in facilitating standards including DEFRA, BSI, the Carbon Trust and the Global Footprint Network, to ensure that furniturefootprinter™ remains compliant with existing and emerging standards

Furniturefootprinter™ is designed to be fully compliant with ISO 14064-1 which sets out how organisations should monitor and quantify their emissions. This in turn is compliant with the WRI (World Resources Institute) and WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) Green House Gas protocol. The protocol takes the approach of identifying emissions by 'scope': Scope 1 being direct usage on site, Scope 2 being emissions caused by power or energy consumption but emitted off site (e.g. electricity and steam) and Scope 3 being a much wider category of indirect emissions such as transport or emissions from the supply chain. As well as reporting by operational area (utilities, transport, etc), furniturefootprinter™ also reports by 'Scope' for simple standard compliant reporting.
